I Just Don't Care

It’s awards season.  People’s Choice, Golden Globes, Academy Awards just to name a few.  If you click here you’ll be taken to the Wikipedia page which shows a listing of awards for cinema given out yearly by country.  It’s actually a bit over the top.  Wait, who am I kidding?  It is a lot over the top.

The red carpet, the dresses, the jewels, the reporters and all the fuss made about the movies or the latest TV melodrama.  I just don’t get it.  I just don’t care.

I go to movies for several different reasons:

·         I read the book and really liked it.
·         I like the previews and trailers I’ve seen.
·         I like the actor or actress starring in it.
·         My friends/coworkers recommended it.

Nowhere in my decision process does the award status of the movie come into play, nowhere.

So why am I the odd one out?  My daughter DVR’d the Golden Globes last night because she was going out and didn’t want to miss them.  One of my coworkers attended a Golden Globes party, another blogs about the red carpet and who was wearing what designer dress.  And I still don’t care.

Growing up, my mother - an Italian immigrant who spoke very broken English loved watching the awards shows.  She also liked watching the Miss America and Miss Universe pageants.   My dad did not like watching these programs and so a little war would ensue when it was time for them.  My mom always chose her battles carefully and watching these shows was one she always won.  In her case I think I can understand.

My mom grew up during WWII in Italy.  Her village was bombed, life was grim.  She married my father, a handsome American GI of Italian descent (he was first generation US) and came over on a ship through Ellis Island and eventually became a citizen.  They settled in a small town in a coal mining area along the Ohio River.  There was nothing glamorous about their life.  They worked hard and raised a family, always paying the bills on time, never on credit. Life was hard. To my mom, these award shows and pageants were an escape to a more fascinating world.  I get that.

But, in my life today, I just don’t care.

I am with you, I don't watch the shows either, but I do like to see what everyone is wearing!

the most ridiculous thing is "and the winner is [insert_ridiculously_over-celebrated_person] for [insert_ripped_off_idea_for_a_movie], which opens LATER THIS YEAR.

how the crap am i going to care about an actor who played a role in a movie that hasn't even come out yet? it is supposed to be just an ad for going to see the movie?

what's next? giving bieber a lifetime achievement award for all the philanthropy he gave while revolutionizing the artificial heart during studio sessions on moon base 7. because he deserves it. he's due.
